Preparing Your Basic Embroidery Frame
A well-prepared embroidery frame is the foundation of beautiful and precise embroidery. In this lesson, we will learn how to assemble a basic wooden embroidery frame and securely stretch the fabric to create a smooth, firm, and evenly tensioned working surface.
We will begin by preparing the wooden frame, wrapping its longer sides with soft, thick fabric, and securing the fabric with hand stitches. You will then learn how to assemble the frame correctly, maintaining precise 90-degree angles and leaving enough space for adjusting the fabric tension.
Next, we will attach the embroidery fabric to the frame using pins and hand stitching before carefully stretching the remaining sides with silk ribbon. Throughout the process, you will learn how to distribute tension evenly, maintain straight edges, and achieve the firm, drum-like surface essential for comfortable and accurate tambour embroidery.
Materials and Tools You Will Need
Basic wooden embroidery frame with bolts and screws
Embroidery fabric (silk or organza)
Thick, soft fabric (wool or velvet), cut into two strips approximately 10 cm wide and 55 cm long, depending on your frame size
Silk ribbon for stretching and securing the fabric
Pins for temporarily holding the fabric in place
Hand-sewing needle and thread for securing the fabric to the frame
Scissors for cutting fabric, ribbon, and thread
Lighter or small candle for carefully sealing the cut edges of suitable silk ribbon
What You Will Learn
By the end of the lesson, you will be able to:
Prepare a basic wooden embroidery frame for use.
Wrap and secure the frame's longer sides with protective fabric.
Assemble the frame while maintaining accurate 90-degree corners.
Attach embroidery fabric using pins and hand stitches.
Adjust the frame to increase fabric tension.
Secure and stretch the remaining edges using silk ribbon.
Achieve an evenly stretched, drum-tight embroidery surface.
Check the fabric tension and prepare your frame for embroidery.
This lesson will help you develop the essential skills for preparing your own embroidery frame, allowing you to work confidently with even the simplest equipment.
Practice: Prepare your embroidery frame following the techniques demonstrated in the lesson. Once your fabric is securely stretched, check its tension and make sure the edges remain straight and even. Take a few photographs of your completed frame and share them with me, along with any questions or observations.
