Lesson 8.1

Tulip Filling: Vermicelli Stitches with Beads and Sequins

In this lesson, you will explore vermicelli embroidery through a simplified tulip motif. Begin with French Lunéville beadwork along the selected outlines, then practise winding filling stitches without embellishments. Working from the front side, you will repeat these flowing movements with beads and sequins, keeping the filling within the petal borders.

Materials to Prepare

  • Embroidery frame with fabric mounted under tension

  • Printed tulip pattern

  • Sharp pencil

  • Embroidery hook and thread

  • Pre-threaded beads and a thread bobbin

  • Loose beads and sequins

  • Soft pads for holding your materials

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Transfer a simplified tulip outline onto the reverse side of the fabric.

  • Follow selected outlines with French Lunéville beadwork.

  • Create winding vermicelli filling using thread alone.

  • Bring the filling to the borders without crossing them.

  • Add beads and sequins on every second stitch.

  • Adapt the same filling movements to the Aari technique.

Your Practice

Choose a free space on your frame and copy the tulip onto the reverse side, transferring only the lines demonstrated and leaving out the inner petal details. Prepare your threaded beads, make a starting lock and embroider the selected outlines. Leave the central petal unembroidered at this stage.

Practise filling with winding thread stitches, without beads or sequins. Let the curves reach the borders gently, then turn back into the shape without crossing its outline.

Turn the frame to the front side and repeat the winding filling using the Aari technique. Alternate one plain stitch with one stitch carrying a bead or sequin.

Continue until the demonstrated tulip filling is complete, keeping the curves and embellishments within the drawn borders.
