Lesson 2.2
Geometric Embroidery with Beads and Sequins: Aari and Lunéville Techniques
In this practical lesson, you will learn how to embroider geometric shapes using chain stitches, beads, and sequins. We will practice creating sharp corners and changing stitch direction, then explore how to apply beads and sequins with both the Indian Aari and French Lunéville techniques. You will also learn how to secure your stitching and finish thread ends neatly.
Materials to Prepare
Before you begin, have the following materials ready:
Embroidery frame with mounted fabric
Lunéville hook
Metallic embroidery thread
Beads
Sequins
Bobbin for pre-threaded beads and sequins
Scissors
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
Embroider geometric shapes with tambour chain stitches.
Maintain consistent stitch spacing of approximately 2–3 mm.
Create sharp corners using short directional stitches.
Apply beads and sequins from above the fabric using the Aari method.
Work with pre-threaded beads and sequins beneath the frame using the French Lunéville method.
Account for the mirror effect when working from the reverse side.
Secure your stitching and finish thread ends neatly.
Your Practice
Begin by embroidering a small square with chain stitches. Keep your stitch spacing consistent and practice the short directional stitches demonstrated for each corner.
Next, create separate squares with beads and sequins, practicing both the Aari and French Lunéville methods. Follow the corner technique shown for each material, then secure the thread ends. Check both sides of your work for even spacing, clear corners, and a neat finish.
