Lesson 4.1
French Lunéville Sequin Embroidery: Following a Curved Line
In this lesson, you will begin working with sequins using the French Lunéville method. You will transfer pre-threaded sequins onto your working thread, supply them beneath the frame, and attach them individually along a curved guideline. We will focus on supporting each sequin with your fingers and keeping the hook upright for controlled stitching.
Materials to Prepare
Embroidery frame with mounted fabric
Lunéville hook
Embroidery thread on a bobbin
Pre-threaded sequins
Pencil suitable for marking your fabric
Scissors
Needle for threading loose sequins, if needed
For your first practice, choose sequins approximately 5–6 mm in diameter to make them easier to handle.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
Draw a curved guideline on the reverse side of the fabric.
Transfer pre-threaded sequins onto your working thread.
String loose sequins with a needle if needed.
Supply and support individual sequins beneath the frame.
Keep the hook upright while forming stitches.
Follow a curved line with sequins.
Secure the finishing thread and inspect the front of your work.
Your Practice
Turn the frame so the reverse side faces you and draw a curved line with a pencil. Transfer your threaded sequins onto the working thread using the same method practised with beads.
Place the bobbin beneath the frame and make a starting lock. Supply one sequin at a time, supporting it with your fingers as you catch the thread and draw the loop through the fabric. Keep the hook upright and work slowly along the curve.
When the line is complete, draw out a large loop, cut the thread, and secure the end. Turn the frame over to inspect the sequin placement and the shape of your finished curve.
