Lesson 3.2

Indian Aari Beadwork: Applying Loose Beads with the Hook

In this lesson, you will explore the Indian Aari method of bead embroidery, working with the front of the fabric facing you. You will learn how to pick up individual beads with the hook, slide them onto the working loop, and secure them with a stitch. We will focus on consistent spacing and short securing stitches that keep geometric corners precise.

Materials to Prepare

  • Embroidery frame with your traced practice figures

  • Lunéville hook

  • Embroidery thread

  • Loose beads in a different colour from the previous exercise

  • Soft wool or felt pad for holding the beads

  • Scissors

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Set up your frame for beadwork from the front of the fabric.

  • Pick up a loose bead with the hook.

  • Slide the bead onto the working loop and secure it with a stitch.

  • Maintain consistent spacing between beaded stitches.

  • Create sharp corners using two short securing stitches.

  • Follow a traced geometric outline with beads.

Your Practice

Keep the front of the fabric facing you and arrange your loose beads on a soft pad. Make a starting lock at the beginning of the traced figure.

Pick up one bead with the hook, slide it onto the working loop, and secure it with a stitch. Keep the loop above the fabric, then repeat with the next bead. Follow the drawn line and aim for even spacing throughout.

At each corner, make a short securing stitch into the angle, followed by another in the opposite direction. Once the corner is secured, continue along the next side with beads.
