Lesson 5.2

French Lunéville Sequin Embroidery: Completing the Rose

In this lesson, you will continue working on your rose motif from the reverse side of the fabric. You will prepare threaded sequins and embroider the second spiral, beginning at the flower’s centre. This exercise combines the beaded spiral from the previous lesson with a sequin spiral to complete the rose. For additional practice, you can repeat the pattern using the Aari technique.

Materials to Prepare

  • Embroidery frame with your rose motif in progress

  • Lunéville hook

  • Pre-threaded sequins

  • Embroidery thread on a bobbin

  • Scissors

  • Printed rose pattern and pencil for optional Aari practice

  • Loose beads and sequins for optional Aari practice

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Transfer threaded sequins onto your working thread.

  • Make a starting lock at the centre of the flower.

  • Follow a spiral with individually secured sequins.

  • Combine beaded and sequin lines within a rose motif.

  • Secure the thread ends and inspect the finished embroidery.

  • Repeat the design using the Aari technique for additional practice.

Your Practice

With the reverse side of the fabric facing you, transfer your sequins onto the working thread and place the bobbin beneath the frame. Make a starting lock at the centre of the rose.

Supply one sequin at a time and secure it with a stitch, following the second spiral towards its outer end. Once complete, cut the thread and secure both ends. Turn the frame over and check the finished rose.
