Lesson 6

Aari Embroidery: Combining Two Beads and a Sequin

In this lesson, you will explore a decorative combination of beads and larger sequins using the Indian Aari method. Working from the front of the fabric, you will begin at the centre of the second rose pattern and attach two beads and one sequin together on each working loop. You will practise supporting the materials with your finger and securing them with a stitch.

Materials to Prepare

  • Embroidery frame with mounted fabric

  • Printed second rose pattern

  • Pencil suitable for marking your fabric

  • Lunéville hook

  • Embroidery thread

  • Loose beads

  • Larger sequins

  • Scissors

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Transfer the second rose pattern onto your mounted fabric.

  • Make a starting lock at the centre of the flower.

  • Pick up two beads followed by one sequin with the hook.

  • Support the beads and sequin while drawing out a loop.

  • Slide all three elements onto the working loop and secure them together.

  • Repeat the combination along the traced rose pattern.

Your Practice

Print the second rose pattern and trace it onto your fabric. Keep the front of the fabric facing you and make a starting lock at the centre of the flower.

Place two beads onto the hook, followed by one larger sequin. Support them with your finger, insert the hook into the fabric, catch the thread, and draw out a loop. Slide the beads and sequin onto the loop and secure them with a stitch.

Repeat this sequence along the traced line, keeping the order of the materials consistent and working slowly to control their placement.
