Lesson 15.3

Dimensional Lily Embroidery: Carpet Beading with Larger Pearls

In this lesson, you will explore how carpet beading creates volume within a large lily. Building on petals already decorated with fish scale sequins and pearls, you will begin at the flower’s base with smaller pearls and attach them individually. You will also explore colour variations to personalise the filling.

Materials to Prepare

  • Embroidery frame with your large lily motif in progress

  • Lunéville hook

  • Embroidery thread

  • Pearls in smaller and larger sizes

  • Pearls in different colours, if desired

  • Soft pads for holding your materials

  • Scissors

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Use carpet beading to create dimensional petal filling.

  • Begin the filling at the base of the lily.

  • Attach pearls individually using the Aari technique.

  • Combine pearl sizes within a floral motif.

  • Alternate pearl colours for decorative variation.

  • Coordinate pearl filling with existing sequin petals.

Your Practice

Keep the front of the fabric facing you and prepare your pearls by size and colour. Make a starting lock at the base of the lily.

Begin with the smaller pearls, attaching them one at a time using the carpet beading method demonstrated. Continue building the filling, arranging the pearls to create volume within the petal’s shape.

If desired, alternate pearl colours as you work. Review the pearl-filled sections alongside the fish scale sequin petals to see how the contrasting textures shape the flower.
