Lesson 13.1

Aari Daisy Embroidery: Filling Petals with Sequin Rows

In this lesson, you will continue embroidering the daisy’s petals with sequins using the Indian Aari technique. You will move from the completed petal to the next without cutting the thread, using plain stitches to connect sections and return between rows. As the filling progresses, you will change direction and adjust the rows to fit the narrowing, triangular space inside each petal.

Materials to Prepare

  • Embroidery frame with your daisy motif in progress

  • Lunéville hook

  • Embroidery thread

  • Loose sequins

  • Soft pad for holding the sequins

  • Scissors

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Move between petals with plain stitches without cutting the thread.

  • Fill a petal with successive rows of sequins.

  • Return to a row’s starting point using plain stitches.

  • Secure changes of direction near the flower’s centre.

  • Work sequin rows anticlockwise where demonstrated.

  • Adapt the filling to the remaining triangular space within a petal.

Your Practice

Continue from the completed first petal, using plain stitches to reach the second. Begin adding sequins at the point shown in the lesson and follow the petal towards the flower’s centre.

Return to the starting point with plain stitches, then embroider the second sequin row. When you reach the centre again, make a couple of securing stitches, stitch upwards, and begin the next row anticlockwise.

Observe the triangular space remaining inside the petal. Stop when there is no room to continue the current row, move upwards with plain stitches, and begin the fourth row anticlockwise as demonstrated. Use the same approach to continue filling the remaining petals.
