Lesson 11.3

Decorative Mesh Filling: Stitched Lines and Beaded Intersections

In this lesson, you will begin exploring mesh filling for the inner sections of your fleur-de-lis. Working from the front of the fabric, you will follow the drawn grid with stitched lines and place beads at their intersections. This first method uses a separate starting lock for each line, creating a precise finish that rewards patience and careful placement.

Materials to Prepare

  • Embroidery frame with your fleur-de-lis motif and drawn mesh

  • Lunéville hook

  • Embroidery thread

  • Loose beads

  • Soft pad for holding the beads

  • Scissors

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Follow the drawn mesh inside a leaf section.

  • Begin each line with a separate starting lock.

  • Create neat stitched lines within the motif.

  • Place beads at the intersections of the mesh.

  • Maintain a clearly defined grid through careful stitch placement.

Your Practice

Keep the front of the fabric facing you and identify the mesh guidelines inside the leaves.

Make a starting lock at the beginning of one line, then stitch along it. Add a bead wherever it crosses another drawn line.

Repeat the process for the remaining guidelines, beginning each line with its own lock. Work patiently, keeping the stitching aligned with the pattern and the beads positioned at the intersections.
