Lesson 10.1

Dimensional Flower Embroidery: Folded Sequins and Pearls

In this lesson, you will explore another way to use your embroidery hook by creating a dimensional flower. You will combine large folded sequins with pearls and arrange them around a small drawn circle to form daisy-like petals. If you do not have these materials, you can watch the demonstration for ideas to use in future projects.

Materials to Prepare

  • Embroidery frame with mounted fabric

  • Lunéville hook

  • Embroidery thread

  • Large sequins suitable for folding

  • Pearls in assorted sizes, including approximately 5 mm

  • Pencil suitable for marking your fabric

  • Scissors

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Draw a small circle to guide petal placement.

  • Make a starting lock along the circle.

  • Combine a pearl and a folded sequin on the hook.

  • Slide both elements onto the working loop and secure them with a stitch.

  • Arrange dimensional petals around the circle.

  • Explore new uses for the embroidery hook in decorative projects.

Your Practice

Draw a small circle on your fabric and make a starting lock at any point along its outline.

Place a pearl of approximately 5 mm onto the hook. Fold a large sequin as demonstrated and place it onto the hook after the pearl.

Insert the hook into the fabric and draw out a loop. Slide the sequin and pearl onto the loop, then secure the petal with a stitch.

Repeat this sequence around the drawn circle, arranging the folded sequins like the petals of a daisy.
