Lesson 3.3

French Lunéville Beadwork: A Pointed Leaf and Connecting Lines

In this lesson, you will practise French Lunéville beadwork on a leaf in your button motif. You will begin at its base, secure the pointed tip, and use plain travelling stitches to reach the next beaded section. You will also practise passing over an existing embroidered line without adding beads, then finish and inspect your work from the front.

Materials to Prepare

  • Embroidery frame with your button motif in progress

  • Lunéville hook

  • Embroidery thread on a bobbin

  • Pre-threaded beads

  • Scissors

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Begin a beaded leaf at its base.

  • Define the pointed tip with a short securing stitch.

  • Return along an existing chain using plain stitches.

  • Navigate a crossing without adding beads.

  • Secure and trim the finishing thread tail.

  • Inspect the beadwork from the front of the fabric.

Your Practice

Transfer your beads onto the working thread and keep the reverse side of the fabric facing you. Make a starting lock at the leaf’s base and begin attaching beads along the traced line.

At the pointed tip, make a short securing stitch. Return with plain stitches placed close to the existing chain, then resume beadwork along the indicated path.

Where the line crosses previous embroidery, use a plain stitch to pass over it before continuing with beads.

Finish with a short securing stitch, draw out a large loop, and cut the thread. Wrap the loose tail around the embroidered chain and trim the excess. Turn the frame over to check the completed leaf.
