Lesson 5.1

Dress Assembly: Sewing and Finishing Sheer Sleeves

In this first sewing tutorial, you will assemble the sheer sleeves prepared in the previous lesson. You will fold and pin each sleeve, stitch the seam and finish the raw edges neatly before continuing with the dress assembly.

Materials to Prepare

  • Cut sheer sleeve pieces

  • Pins

  • Sewing machine and matching thread

  • Overlocker, if available

  • Scissors

Learning Outcomes


By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Fold and align the sleeve edges for sewing.

  • Pin and stitch the sleeve seam.

  • Finish raw edges with an overlocker or a suitable sewing-machine stitch.

Your Practice


Fold each sleeve in half, align the seam edges and secure them with pins. Sew the seam as demonstrated.


Finish the raw edges using an overlocker. Alternatively, use the edge-finishing stitch shown in the lesson on your regular sewing machine. Repeat for the second sleeve.
