Lesson 1
Dress Embroidery Preparation: Pattern Layout and Fabric Transfer
In this first dress practical lesson, you will learn how to plan embroidery within a dress pattern. You will copy and mirror the front section, explore decorative arrangements and prepare a precise design using a rhombus filling motif. The lesson focuses on placement, symmetry and careful transfer before embroidery begins.
Materials to Prepare
Front dress pattern
Tracing paper and A4 paper
Masking tape or clear adhesive tape
Printed filling motifs supplied with the lesson
Decorative chains, stones or other embellishments for planning
Pencils, pen and eraser
Two rulers: one for paper work and a clean one for fabric transfer
Scanner, computer and printer for the demonstrated mirroring method
Embroidery frame with fabric mounted
Two books or flat boxes to support the pattern
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
Copy a dress pattern while maintaining its centre line.
Align mirrored sections to create a symmetrical layout.
Explore embellishment placement before drawing the design.
Position a rhombus filling motif within the dress outline.
Reserve selected areas for additional decorative details.
Scan and mirror one half of a design for accurate symmetry.
Transfer the completed pattern onto fabric and check for missing lines.
Your Practice
Copy the front dress pattern onto tracing paper, keeping the centre line clearly marked. Reproduce the two mirrored halves on A4 paper, align them carefully and join them with tape.
Arrange your chosen embellishments over the paper pattern to explore possible designs. Place the rhombus motif underneath and copy its lines, leaving the indicated spaces near the edges for additional details.
Refine one half of the design, erase unnecessary marks and define the final lines with a pen. Check it against the original dress pattern, then scan, mirror and print it to create the matching half. Join the printed sections accurately.
Support the completed pattern on two books or flat boxes beneath your embroidery frame. Transfer the design with a medium pencil and a separate, clean ruler. Lift the frame gently from time to time to check that every line has been copied before beginning embroidery.
