Lesson 5.2

Second Feather: Decorative Accents and Mixed Stone Filling

In this lesson, you will explore different ways to embellish the remaining feather sections. You will attach a decorative piece with zigzag stitches, build beaded outlines and fill enclosed spaces with stones or pearls. Paired sequins add texture, while smaller beads help complete narrow areas.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Secure a decorative accessory with zigzag stitches.

  • Outline and thicken selected sections with beads.

  • Cross existing embroidery without reusing stitch holes.

  • Adapt stone and pearl sizes to the available space.

  • Use plain stitches to travel along the feather’s stem.

  • Alternate paired sequins with larger stones.

Materials to Prepare

  • Embroidery frame with your second feather in progress

  • Embroidery hook and thread

  • Decorative accessory of your choice

  • Large light blue stones

  • Beads, stones or pearls in various sizes

  • Loose sequins

  • Soft pads for holding your materials

  • Scissors

Your Practice

Make a starting lock and attach your chosen decorative piece with zigzag stitches. Outline the section with beads, navigating existing embroidery carefully and avoiding previous stitch holes. Thicken the indicated line as demonstrated.

Begin filling inside the outline with large light blue stones. Use beads or plain stitches in the narrow upper area, then return to the stone filling. Select different sizes wherever needed to fit the shape.

Outline and fill the next section, then follow the stem with plain stitches to reach the third section.

Complete its beaded outline and fill the interior by alternating two sequins attached together with a larger stone. Switch to smaller beads as the available space narrows.
