Lesson 4.2

Second Feather: Crystal Centre and Dimensional Sequin Layers

In this lesson, you will build the central feature of your second feather in decorative layers. A large crystal is surrounded by rhinestone chain, approximately 5 mm pearls and a row of paired sequins. You will also explore fitting fish scale filling into small spaces, adapting the placement to keep the design clear and balanced.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Attach a large crystal using a needle and metallic thread.

  • Secure rhinestone chain around the crystal with zigzag stitches.

  • Add a closely placed pearl border.

  • Attach two sequins together to create volume.

  • Adapt sequin placement around existing embellishments.

  • Fit optional fish scale filling into small enclosed areas.

Materials to Prepare

  • Embroidery frame with your second feather in progress

  • Embroidery hook

  • Hand-sewing needle

  • Metallic embroidery thread

  • Large crystal suitable for sewing

  • Rhinestone chain

  • Pearls, approximately 5 mm

  • Tiffany-coloured and light grey sequins

  • Soft pads for holding your materials

  • Suitable chain cutters and scissors

Your Practice

Using a hand-sewing needle and metallic thread, secure the large crystal in the feather’s centre. Position the rhinestone chain around it, make a starting lock and attach the chain with zigzag stitches. Practise in a spare area of the frame first if needed, then trim the excess chain.

Add a second row of approximately 5 mm pearls, placing them close to the chain. For the third row, attach two sequins together at each placement to build volume.

Follow the demonstrated route around the centre, adjusting the sequins to fit the available space rather than forcing them onto the drawn line. Add a short securing stitch before changing direction and place the finishing lock beneath the sequins.

If desired, fill the small upper and lower spaces with Tiffany-coloured and light grey sequins using the fish scale technique. Practise this compact filling separately first, or leave these areas open.
