Lesson 4

Feather Embroidery: Pearl Filling with Varied Sizes and Colours

In this lesson, you will decorate feather sections with pearls in varying diameters and shades of green and blue. You will begin around the inside edge, then fill the remaining space by eye. The focus is on choosing pearls that fit each gap while balancing colour and size throughout the section.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Select pearl sizes to suit the available space.

  • Balance different colours within a feather section.

  • Work around an inner edge without drawing an additional guideline.

  • Secure corners and individual pearls where needed.

  • Fill enclosed spaces with varied pearl sizes.

  • Finish the embroidery and secure the thread ends.

Materials to Prepare

  • Embroidery frame with your feather design in progress

  • Embroidery hook and thread

  • Green and blue pearls in various sizes

  • Soft pads for holding your pearls

  • Scissors

Your Practice

Compare your pearls against the feather section before attaching them. Explore suitable positions for the different colours and sizes, then make a starting lock inside the corner and attach the first pearl.

Continue around the inside edge, alternating pearl colours and diameters. Work by eye and add two securing stitches at the corner, following the demonstration.

Fill the enclosed space with pearls, choosing each size to fit comfortably. Add securing stitches whenever needed and repeat the method in another feather section.

Use a few plain stitches in the centre where demonstrated to complete the fragment. Finish with a lock, draw out the loop and secure the thread ends.
