Lesson 3
Feather Embroidery: Mixing Matt and Shiny Sequins
In this lesson, you will explore how colour and surface finish affect your feather embroidery. Using 4 mm sequins, you will alternate matt and shiny finishes, then introduce more light mint to soften the next section. Short securing stitches help maintain clear corners as you change direction.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
Combine matt and shiny sequins within one section.
Alternate blue and mint colours along the feather’s guidelines.
Secure turns with short plain stitches.
Adjust colour proportions to soften the overall effect.
Personalise the remaining feather details.
Materials to Prepare
Embroidery frame with your feather design in progress
Embroidery hook and thread
Blue and light mint sequins, 4 mm, in matt and shiny finishes
Soft pads for holding your sequins
Scissors
Your Practice
Keep the front side of the frame facing you. Make a starting lock at the lower part of the indicated feather section and attach the first shiny sequin. Continue along the guideline, alternating matt and shiny sequins.
At the lower turn, add a short securing stitch downwards before continuing upwards with sequins. At the next upper turn, place a short plain stitch upwards, then follow the line down to complete the section.
Move to the next feather section and introduce more light mint sequins for a softer colour balance. Secure each turn and continue along the inner lines, alternating colours as demonstrated.
Complete the remaining lower details with your preferred balance of colours and finishes.
