Lesson 3.3

Butterfly Embroidery: Folded Sequin Wing Filling

In this lesson, you will create dimensional filling inside the butterfly wing using large folded sequins. You will alternate colours and nacre finishes, secure each row with a bead and return with plain stitches before beginning the next row.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Fold large sequins as demonstrated to create volume.

  • Transfer folded sequins onto the loop and attach them with longer stitches.

  • Alternate sequin colours and finishes.

  • Finish rows with large beads and securing stitches.

  • Use plain return stitches to build successive rows.

Materials to Prepare

  • Embroidery frame with your butterfly in progress

  • Embroidery hook and thread

  • Large sequins, approximately 12 mm, in contrasting colours or finishes

  • Nacre sequins

  • Large beads

  • Soft pads for holding your materials

Your Practice

Make a starting lock at the indicated point inside the wing. Fold the first 12 mm sequin as demonstrated, transfer it onto the loop and attach it with a long stitch. Fold the nacre sequin in the same way and continue, alternating colours.

Finish the first row with a large bead and a short securing stitch. Return along the demonstrated path with plain stitches, then begin the second row of folded sequins.

Add another bead, secure it and return with plain stitches. Complete the third row by placing the folded sequins along the previously stitched path.
