Lesson 3.2

Second Feather: Metallic Satin Stitch Curls

In this lesson, you will develop the thicker curls of your second feather using the demonstrated satin stitch technique. Working with metallic thread, you will place neighbouring rows close together, following the shape of each curl. Optional beads highlight selected tips, while short securing stitches support the turns.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Build thicker curls with closely placed rows of stitches.

  • Use short securing stitches when changing direction.

  • Stitch beside previous rows without reusing the same holes.

  • Follow the demonstrated route between upper and lower curl sections.

  • Add optional bead accents at curl tips.

  • Bring thread ends to the reverse side and secure them.

Materials to Prepare

  • Embroidery frame with your second feather in progress

  • Embroidery hook

  • Metallic embroidery thread used in the previous lessons

  • Beads for optional accents

  • Soft pad for holding your beads

  • Scissors

Your Practice

Make a starting lock in the indicated section and trace the curl with regular stitches. Use longer stitches where demonstrated, then add a short securing stitch before turning.

Work back and forth, placing each row close to the previous one to build the curl’s width. Avoid inserting the hook into existing holes. Add beads where desired.

Continue to the next sections, following the red guide to embroider the upper and lower parts of each curl. Place a bead at the indicated tip, return towards the feather’s base and follow the stem to reach the final curl.

Complete the remaining stitching, draw the thread ends to the reverse side and secure them neatly.
