Lesson 2.2
Second Feather: Building Texture with Beads and Layered Stitches
In this lesson, you will continue outlining the second feather and explore two ways to build up its thicker sections. You may add beads or stitch over an existing embroidered line for a thread-only effect. The demonstration also follows the feather’s stem before moving into the remaining curls, leaving room for your own decorative choices.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
Identify thicker areas in the illustrated pattern.
Emphasise selected lines with beads.
Build thickness by layering tambour stitches over existing embroidery.
Follow the stem into neighbouring curls.
Choose between beaded and thread-only details.
Materials to Prepare
Embroidery frame with your second feather in progress
Embroidery hook
Silver metallic embroidery thread
White and grey beads from the previous lesson
Soft pad for holding your beads
Scissors
Your Practice
Continue along the feather’s guidelines in the same manner as the previous lesson. Where the illustration shows a thicker line, add beads or keep the section entirely in thread.
Practise building up one section by placing additional tambour stitches over the existing embroidery, following the demonstration.
Embroider the stem, then continue into the next beaded sections and groups of curls. Complete these details with your preferred balance of beads and layered stitching.
